Maybe Angels, or Meteors or Precious Regrets and how could one still possibly trade with them under contemporary conditions?
Lecture by Josef Strau
June 5, 2023, 6 pm – Angewandte, Painting department (project room), Oskar-Kokoschka-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna

The lecture will try to make attempts to outline basic concerns with some semi-theoretical motives, asking how they could be practiced and used as tools in artists every day lives and daily art practices, like trying to produce imaginary tools and instruments and using such in even difficult issues like applying epistemological gains into the present time practice, or dealing with failing and with recovering, or finding out if something lost could indeed be recovered by performing cultural activity as art or writing practice, or even asking how to apply even some quite simple self help tools in highly competitive situations, for instance reading theories of time and duration, attempting to even include how Henry Bergson developed an enormous but partly forgotten historical impact on writing and art practices, and how his preference to concepts of temporality could be possibly used quite practically again now for instance as a key to self observation and to detecting and liberating from inherent bias or the restraining orders of conventional judgmental operations.
Text: Josef Strau

Josef Strau lives in Vienna now again after years in New York. Under the title El Comercio de Lamentos Finos, he just presented most recently an exhibition at House of Gaga in Mexico City and more or less recently had solo exhibitions at Greene Naftali, Buchholz, and at Kunstverein Rheinlande und Westfalen, Düsseldorf named Spirits and Objects and How Non-Productive Love is Sometimes Contained in Them. Strau has as well published as writer in different publications and art magazines and in his own books and many independently produced editions. He was also the organizer of Galerie Meerrettich at the Volksbuehne, Berlin and cofounded collaborative companies like Montezuma, The Metaphysical Store, and Single Moms in New York and Mexico City.
